Michael J. Belak, age 88, of Plymouth, passed into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at Allied Meade Street Skilled Nursing.
Born January 27, 1937 in West Nanticoke, he was the son of the late Michael Belak and Martha Hall Belak.
He was a graduate of Nanticoke High School, Class of 1955, and was a member of All Saints Parish, Plymouth. He was a proud veteran serving with the United States Marine Corps followed by the Marine Reserves.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a map router for Luzerne County 911. Earlier in his career, he was employed as a purchasing agent and manager for Leslie Fay Company.
In the 1960s, he coached basketball, working alongside Red Jones at St. Vincent’s High School School and later coached in the Plymouth Township Recreation Association Basketball League, where he remained involved for several years.
A talented athlete, he was an avid softball player and once pitched a no-hitter. He remained active in the sport through his late 50s.
Above all, he cherished his grandson, Matthew, who was the light of his life. Known affectionately as “Poppop”, he shared a special bond with Matthew, marked by laughter and inside jokes that will be remembered fondly.
Michael was also a devoted fan of the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former, Maryann Barbara Partington, who passed away in July 2007.
Surviving are his loving sons, Brian M. Belak (Mary Szeliga), of Plymouth Twp., and John Belak and his wife, Dara, of Hazleton; and grandson, Matthew J Belak.
Family and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Saturday at All Saints Parish, Plymouth. Interment and military service will follow in St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Larksville.
Family and friends may call on Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the S.J. Grontkowski Funeral Home, 530 West Main Street, Plymouth.
