Joseph J. Herman , age 89, of Lyndwood Hanover Twp., passed into eternal rest on Monday, November 10, 2025 at Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas.
Born December 30, 1935 in Buttonwood Section of Hanover Twp., he was the son of the late Andrew J. Herman and Mary V. Filipovicz Herman. Joseph was a graduate of Hanover High School, Class of 1953, and was a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Wilkes-Barre. He was a veteran serving with the United States Army and was a member of the AMVETS Post 59, Breslau, Hanover Twp.
Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as a salesman for Petris Baking Products and The Luzerne County Transportation Department. After retirement, he had worked at Mohegan Sun Casino, Wilkes-Barre.
He was an accomplished accordionist who played entirely by ear, never having taken a formal lesson. Over the years, he shared his talent at countless weddings and community gatherings throughout the area.
He especially enjoyed watching NFL and college football, as well as Major League Baseball, alongside his sister Carol. The two shared many hours together as she looked up the topics he was curious about—he loved learning new things and discovering the world through their conversations.
He will be remembered as a loving and devoted father, husband, brother, uncle, and dear friend whose kindness and warmth touched all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Rita Sipper, who passed away on December 5, 2022; his daughter, Marita Richards, who passed on August 19, 2019; brothers and sisters, Andrew C. Herman, Marie Shumoski, George J. Herman and Agatha Viti; and his beloved pet cat, Toby.
Surviving are his loving sisters, Carol Ann Yozviak (Joseph), of Nanticoke, Helen Pojunis, of Wilkes-Barre Twp., Eleanor James, of Shavertown, and Frances Herman, Buttonwood Section of Hanover Twp.; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and dear friends, David Maximowicz, Brandon Maximowicz and Beth.
Family and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 10 a.m. at St. Robert Bellarmine Parish, Wilkes-Barre. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hanover Twp.
Joseph’s family would like to express deep appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at the VA Medical Center, Wilkes-Barre, the Meadows Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Dallas, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore.
